Q&A with @mindfulnesslyhealthy

We came across Aimee (@mindfulnesslyhealthy) when she won our first giveaway competition on Instagram and since then we’ve been so inspired by her journey in health and fitness! Empowering women with all things health, fitness and most importantly mental health related, we sat down with her to find out who is @mindfulnesslyhealthy and what she’s learnt along the way. We hope this helps anyone who may be struggling with any issues related to health, fitness and mental health. 

  

Who is @mindfulnesslyhealthy? 

I’m Aimee, from the North of England, UK!  I’ve always wanted to create an account to inspire, educate and motivate others and when I had a very difficult time at the start of the year due to family bereavements, I needed to channel those emotions and put my focus into something I was passionate about - raising awareness for Mental Health & Eating Disorders, Health and Fitness and Self love!

 

What started your fitness journey?                                                            

I started my fitness journey when I was 16 and I had a free gym at my work. I started out by going to the gym a couple of times each week and instantly fell in love. The more I went, the more I was curious about the gym, weightlifting and nutrition and started to research into different fitness models (like Jamie Eason, Carly Thornton and Andreia Brazier), workout plans and really deepen my understanding of food! In less than a year I had shed 3 stone in weight and was the smallest and leanest I had ever been. Note!! - I had never set out to ‘diet’ I just learnt more about the power of different foods and made small changes to my lifestyle, which eventually ended up in the weight loss naturally. 

 

What does a typical day for you look like?          

I wake up every morning around 6.30/7am and listen to a podcast whilst I’m getting ready for work, I arrive at work around 8 where I eat my breakfast (usually protein oats and fruit).
I eat my lunch around 12 midday and I’ll have a protein source such as chicken, turkey or tuna with steamed veggies and couscous.
I have a snack around 4 pm which is a protein shake or bar or another small meal before heading to the gym around 5.30pm! I usually train for 1 hour and a half and then eat my last meal afterwards, which is usually salmon and veggies!
I have a real sweet tooth so I like something sweet after the gym like sweetened quark & peanut butter!           


What is your current training split?    

Monday -                   Shoulders and Tris 
Tuesday -                  Legs (focus on glutes) 
Wednesday -             Back and Bi’s 
Thursday -                 Rest Day
Friday -                      Legs x2 (Quad and Hamstring focus) 
Saturday -                 9 am Spin class (this is my favourite time of the week - I love it!!) 
Sunday -                    All over body circuits (nothing too heavy) 


How do you relax?

There are a number of things I do to relax, like listening to music or podcasts, taking a long walk outside. Being outside really clears my head. I love going on holiday and visiting new cities and places. I’m obsessed with travelling and I’m happiest when I’m immersing myself in another culture and practising mindful meditation! 


What has health and fitness done for you

*Health and fitness has made me realise that not one size fits all and everyone is different both physically and mentally. All journeys will vary from person to person 
*To not compare yourself to others - strive to be the best version of yourself!
*To spend time on self-care and doing the things that you love - if you’re not doing at least one thing a week you love then something needs to change! 
*People you’ve met in the past year can be just as supportive and proud of you as those friends you’ve known your whole life.
*Mental health should be prioritised just as much as physical health - be kind to yourself and others, you never know what battles people are secretly facing.
*Look after your body, it’s the only place you have to live in        


What do you love most about sharing your journey online?

What I love the most is raising awareness and using my platform to educate people on the lessons I have learnt along the way. By telling my story, I hope to help people avoid making the same mistakes as I did and encourage the importance of mental health when losing weight!  I also love the community of people who I share my story with - they are truly inspiring and supportive of me and I’m forever grateful to have met them through my personal fitness journey!


What do you hope people will take from your Instagram?

I hope people take honest, open and very personal lessons I have learnt and use them to make a positive impact on their lives. I hope people read my messages and feel inspired, motivated and educated to be mindful about their personal journey to health. Losing weight and having a lifestyle change can be incredibly tough both physically and mentally and I want to make sure that the people who follow me get through the challenges and achieve what they set out to do! 


Who/What is your biggest inspiration? 

Sounds cliché but I would honestly say my biggest inspirations are my family and friends! They are all so driven to do what they love and that pushes me to do the same! It’s very rare I hear excuses from them as to why they can’t do something, they just get out and do it which I admire so much. Not only do they inspire me, but they also support me in everything I do and I’m truly grateful to have the best support system I possibly could have!
